It is the Texas Photographic Society's National Show that was Juried by Lisa Sutcliffe. The exhibit has a wide range of work and many have extremely good prices. go to http://www.tccphotogallery.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-29713329547445347832009-02-09T11:28:00.000-05:002009-02-09T11:28:00.000-05:00Anthony,As an emerging artist just testing the ide...Anthony,

As an emerging artist just testing the idea of selling you work for the first time, I wouldn't focus too much on fine tuning your pricing; it will likely take care of itself if it is within a reasonable range that can be an impulse buy for a collector. I'd actually try to redouble your focus on making the best work you can and let the pricing settle naturally where it may. Good luck!DLKCOLLECTIONhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14875914464454488384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-31233638933923427952009-02-09T11:11:00.000-05:002009-02-09T11:11:00.000-05:00Mike,Thanks for the comment. I did a quick informal check, and the only consensus that seems to be coming back is that consignments are meaningfully down (a small number of data points, so hard to draw much of a conclusion). The underlying what comes next is still murky it seems. We'll just have to wait for the catalogues to see what's there...DLKCOLLECTIONhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14875914464454488384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-90968532685708602042009-02-08T10:55:00.000-05:002009-02-08T10:55:00.000-05:00I have been taking photographs for several years n...I have been taking photographs for several years now, merely dabbling in contests but never selling anything. However, recently a photo of mine was accepted into a contest (NSAL Emerging Artist Competition) and when I took the matted and framed (18x24) photo to the gallery, I was asked to put a price on my work. I had no clue what kind of price to put on it, so I skimmed to gallery for other photos to see how they were priced. What I found was shocking! I saw several 4x6 photos printed on what seemed to be regular printer paper and the artist was asking for $75! Ultimately I priced mine at $150, which I thought was a bit high, but reasonable compared to the other artists’ prices. Considering my lack of knowledge in this economic area of photography, there is not much I can say regarding it all, but one opinion I can voice is that if photographers really want their work to be successful, they’re going to have to sacrifice profits by making their prints more affordable to the general public. In my mind, it is the masses that determine the success of a piece or work. So sure, the economy is in distress right now, but that shouldn’t halt the progression of the photography market!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-25185314656583208792009-02-05T12:52:00.000-05:002009-02-05T12:52:00.000-05:00Nice Blog.. The auction houses are going to be offered much more art from the huge level of personal bankruptcy happening everywhere, and hence they will have to choose only the higher quality works so their auctions don't get too big.

2. With Art dealers failing and strapped for cash, they will not be able to buy the best works back into gallery inventory anymore. Hence the best works will end up at auction.

So, You maybe right.. but just 2 points to think about.. we'll see!

-Mike @ MAOMike @ MAOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10579078925167670819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-87760545906699519902009-02-04T13:37:00.000-05:002009-02-04T13:37:00.000-05:00I think your point about total book sales is a fai...I think your point about total book sales is a fair one. I think that the market is roughy segmented into two main buckets (photo book publishers likely have it sliced and diced more granularly than this): the professional, curator, scholar, collector, artist group and the more casual photo enthusiast/museum goer group. For the first group, I think these folks will still buy books in generally the same volumes as before (and many hand crafted volumes are designed really only for this segment). For the second group, I agree entirely that the $60 impulse buy of an exhibition catalogue or glossy monograph at the museum store or the art table at Borders will decline quite steeply. For these folks, the book is a luxury, and one that is clearly and easily expendable in a down market like this one. All in, the totals will be lower, as you pointed out.DLKCOLLECTIONhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14875914464454488384noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-36627002517932288832009-02-04T12:51:00.000-05:002009-02-04T12:51:00.000-05:00On the photo book side, less photo books will be b...On the photo book side, less photo books will be bought overall. Perhaps collectors will shift down to books, but further down the money chain, if you bought photo books last year and your income takes a hit, that's the first thing you cut back on.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-43750692786122752132009-02-04T00:09:00.000-05:002009-02-04T00:09:00.000-05:00Thank you for sharing the consideration and perspe...Thank you for sharing the consideration and perspective.SunMiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03351138647528893840noreply@blogger.com
