I know Gursky's work like the back of my hand and I even know what they represent to Andreas. And as you state reflections on water have been photographed by many a photographer but few have done it so radical as Andreas here. Most end up with pictures that simply do not function on the level that Andreas' do. They wind up in a simple, usually romantic (William Turner anyone) cliché. But this (like William Turners water) is not a cliché. Do I however think it's his best work, by no means, I think Andreas was at it's best in a the late 80th and early 90th. Then he was primarily a photographer. I hope he'll pickup once again were he left of after having completed Montparnasse and Rhine 2.

My personal favourite is "Hühnerfarm"......

Greets, Ed

blogger.xs4all.nl/stomoxys
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-27801018784375145182011-12-20T11:24:45.212-05:002011-12-20T11:24:45.212-05:00I saw the two Gursky series at Gagosian over the w...I saw the two Gursky series at Gagosian over the weekend. I liked the Bangkok series at first, but ended up distrusting it or rather wanting something different, more authentic (or authentic-seeming). My one lasting impression was that the centerpiece, Bangkok II, bore an uncanny resemblance to a map of the Scottish Highland clans I had up on my wall years ago. Similar to this one on the web:

http://cluaran.free.fr/chisholm/terres.html

I agree with your general description of Oceans, but I have to say I found it both powerful and engaging. I admit I have a special liking for maps, but I noticed that visitors (of which there were many when I was there) made themselves look at Bangkok but just looked at Oceans – or gazed at would be a better word. The size was a big part of it, but it had a role to play, placing the upper regions of the images far enough away from the viewers that they had to make an effort if they wanted to really examine them. I could feel that Gursky was “doing something” i.e. manipulating the images in some way (I now realize, after you pointed it out, that clearing the clouds was a big part of it, also maybe a distortion connected with ringing the land masses around the peripheries of the images), but, far from bothering me, it added a tantalizing sense of uncanniness.John Armstronghttp://www.facebook.com/johnlegweaknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-49436430324259906862011-12-12T16:03:57.190-05:002011-12-12T16:03:57.190-05:00(cross posted to aphotoeditor) I must confess I ha...(cross posted to aphotoeditor) I must confess I had no idea there was an emperor of contemporary photography. That said, the inability of photographers to understand photography and its application never ceases to astound, especially when it comes to fine art.

Great art never does back flips and sells once. It is a body of work. I can easily see how this (new) work is just as astounding as a vast room of wires or crowded beach. You can see an overview here: http://www.matthewmarks.com/artists/andreas-gursky/

If you don't understand a piece, keep looking. You will.

Or just keep flipping through the pages. And you won't. As far as the snide cracks and attempts to diminish this artist go, it also appears to me the lack of curiosity by banal critics is hardly making a dent.

Thanks for making me look at Gursky.Ann-Marie Stillionhttp://www.arttrek.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-62135238515909495182011-12-08T13:18:01.747-05:002011-12-08T13:18:01.747-05:00If you can't make it good, make it BIG.If you can't make it good, make it BIG.Imagemakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09974553354637153501noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3057826380522065501.post-75671734361301502102011-12-06T14:41:53.459-05:002011-12-06T14:41:53.459-05:00I recon Thomas Struth would love your review about...I recon Thomas Struth would love your review about this exhibition...Susi Sonnenscheinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09584295512955948123noreply@blogger.com
